Shut the Main Off First

Before we get there, closing the main shutoff is the single most useful thing you can do. Water damage costs more than almost any plumbing repair, and stopping the flow stops that clock.

A tank that fails does not usually start as a drip. It opens up and empties, and on an upper floor that is a ceiling as well as a floor. If yours is past ten years old, sitting above finished space, or already showing rust around the base, it is worth replacing on your schedule instead of on its own.
