How We Price Our Work

Nashville Metro Plumbing

How We Price Our Work

A fixed price you approve before we start, not an hourly meter you watch with your stomach in a knot. Here is how we get to that number, and the one job where we do it differently.

The Short Version

We come out and look at the problem, which is free. We give you a price for the work. You decide. If you say yes, that price is what you pay, whether the job runs short or long. If we find something unexpected along the way, we stop and quote it separately rather than adding it to the bill. Nearly everything is priced this way; the one exception is a jammed drain we are asked to keep working at, which we sometimes bid hourly and always tell you about first.

We are not the cheapest plumber in Nashville and we do not try to be. What we are is predictable, which in this trade is worth more.

Common Questions About Cost

How much will my plumbing repair cost?

It depends on what we find, and any plumber who quotes you a firm number over the phone is guessing. For most repairs the cost comes down to how much of the system has to come apart to reach the problem, whether the work is inside a finished wall or open, and whether the fix is a component or a section of line. We come out, look at it, and give you a price before we start. The estimate is free and there is no obligation.

Why do you quote a fixed price instead of charging by the hour?

Hourly billing puts the risk on you. If the job takes longer than expected, you pay more, and you have no way to know going in what the ceiling is. It also quietly rewards working slowly, which is not an incentive we want anywhere near our trucks. We price the job, not the clock. You approve a number before we start, and that is the number you pay even if the work takes us twice as long as we thought. There is one narrow exception, below, and you would know about it before we started.

Do you ever charge by the hour?

Rarely, and never without telling you first. The situation where it comes up is a drain that will not clear: a line jammed badly enough that we are being asked to keep working at it, with no honest way to know whether it gives up in twenty minutes or in three hours. Pricing that as a flat job means quoting a number big enough to cover the worst case, and most of the time that costs you more than the work actually takes. So on those calls we sometimes bid by the hour instead. We tell you that before we start, you agree to the rate up front, and nothing lands on the invoice that you did not already know about. Everything else we price as a job.

What happens if you find something else once the job is underway?

We stop and talk to you. If we open a wall and find a second problem, you get a separate price for that work and you decide whether to do it now, later, or not at all. We do not roll surprises into the invoice and hand it to you at the end.

Do you charge for the estimate?

No. Onsite estimates are free across the Nashville metro. We would rather look at the actual problem than guess at it from a phone description, and you should not have to pay for the privilege of finding out what something costs.

Why does sewer work vary so much in price?

Because what is underground varies enormously. A sewer line six feet down in an open yard is a very different job from the same line eleven feet down under a driveway that has to be cut and restored. Line length, depth, access, soil, and whether the city requires a permit all move the number. This is exactly why we run a camera before quoting sewer work. Seeing the actual condition of the line is the difference between a real price and a number someone made up.
