What You Actually See
A camera on a flexible reel goes in at the cleanout and runs the length of the line while we watch the monitor. You watch it with us. Roots coming through a joint look like roots. A belly shows as standing water the camera drives into and out of. An offset joint is a step in the pipe. Scale on cast iron looks like the inside of an old kettle.
A locator on the camera head tells us where the problem sits and how deep, marked on the ground above it. That is the difference between digging once in the right place and opening a trench to go looking.
What It Costs
An inspection is quoted as a fixed price before we start, like everything else we do. What moves it is access more than length: a line with an accessible cleanout is straightforward, and one where we have to pull a toilet or dig to find an access point takes longer. If the line is blocked solid we usually have to clear it before a camera can see anything, and we will tell you that on the phone rather than turning up and adding it.

Before You Buy a House
A standard home inspection does not include the sewer line, and the sewer line is one of the most expensive things on the property to put right. On an older Nashville home it is worth knowing whether you are inheriting clay full of roots or cast iron near the end of its life before you sign, not eighteen months later when it backs up.

What does a sewer camera inspection cost?
It depends on line length and access, but it is a fraction of what exploratory digging costs, which is the entire point. Why inspect before repairing?
Because otherwise you are paying someone to guess. Symptoms upstairs rarely tell you where the problem is underground. The camera shows the actual condition of the pipe and the locator marks the spot on the ground above it, so any dig is in one place instead of several.
Should I get an inspection before buying a home?
If the house is older or has mature trees, yes. A sewer lateral is the homeowner’s responsibility, not the city’s, and it is one of the few major systems a standard home inspection does not look inside. Finding out afterward is expensive.
