What Gas Work Covers
Gas is the one system in a house where the failure mode is not a puddle. That is why every part of it is specified: what the pipe is made of, how it is sized for the appliance load, what pressure it runs at, how it is supported, and how the appliance is vented. It gets permitted and an inspector signs it off, and that inspection is the only independent proof the work was done correctly.
In practice most of what we are called for falls into two jobs. Either something is wrong with a line that already exists, or you want gas somewhere it has never been. Each has its own page.
Replacing an Existing Line
Lines get replaced for three main reasons. Corrosion on older black iron, particularly where it runs through a damp crawlspace or passes through an exterior wall. A line that was adequate for what it originally fed and is not sized for what has been added since. Or work done previously without a permit, which has to be corrected before anything new can be inspected.
We run black iron for most interior work, CSST where the routing calls for it, and polyethylene underground. Whichever it is, the line is pressure tested and permitted. The test is what tells you it is right rather than probably right, and it is the part a lot of unpermitted work skips.

Common Questions
What drives the cost of gas line work?
Run length, whether the line is exposed or has to go through finished space, the pressure and sizing required for the appliance, and permit and inspection requirements. Gas work is code work, and the code is not optional.
Do I need a permit for a gas line?
Usually yes, and that is a good thing. Permitted work gets inspected, which is the only independent confirmation that a gas line was installed correctly. We handle the permitting as part of the job.
Can you run gas to a grill or a fire pit?
